The celebration of the lives of saints through works of art is best known in the fields of painting and sculpture. Less known is the use of music to celebrate saints and martyrs in the liturgical context. The patrons would often intervene to urge musicians to create musical pieces expressly dedicated to the cult of certain saints. In Florence it happened not only for the patron saint, St. John the Baptist, but also for SS. Cosma and Damiano, the Medici saints.
