The 15th century may be regarded as the „classical period“ of the Alta Capella. The combination of shawm, pommer and slide trumpet had become the standard instrumental ensemble throughout Europe, such groups could be found at every court and in every city, playing the polyphony of their time as well as dance music for all kinds of occasions.
In this concert we show our very personal view of the sound world of the early 15th century. The works of Dufay, Binchois and their contemporaries, on the one hand a musical farewell to the Middle Ages, on the other hand groundbreaking for the polyphony of the Renaissance, can be heard both in the typical combination of instruments and on other instruments such as the bagpipes, as well as the then new types of low brass instruments such as the trombone.
Dance music comes from the Brussels Basse Danse Manuscript, where tenors and choreographies of the dances are recorded in gold lettering. We have arranged the other parts of this polyphonic music in the style of the 15th century, as was the practice of the wind players of that time.
