At the turn of the century, frequent artistic—and specifically musical—exchanges took place between the courts of the Medici (Grand Dukes of Tuscany) and the Gonzaga of Mantua; these rich interactions played a significant role in the birth of melodramma (early opera). Presented in a chamber music format, the program highlights key moments of this cultural interchange, featuring music deeply influenced by the prevailing cultural trends and tastes of the time. It particularly showcases the coexistence of the late 16th-century madrigal style and the new monodic genre—championed by the Camerata dei Bardi—which would soon spread rapidly across Europe.
