From ox to nightingale: the metamorphosis of the cello into a virtuoso instrument

Once viewed merely as a provider of harmonic bass lines (the ox), the instrument—in the hands of the era’s early virtuosos—became capable of lyrical expressiveness and remarkable sonic acrobatics (the nightingale). Thus, alongside renowned composers such as Domenico Scarlatti and Luigi Boccherini, the program features cellist-composers who introduced the instrument to the landscape of European virtuosity.
