In this program, the Anonima Frottolisti ensemble offers a glimpse into the history of music dedicated to the Franciscan ideal, spanning the Order’s first three centuries. This anthology highlights both the genre’s cultivated nature and its closeness to “popular” forms of devotion during the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance—a symbolic tribute to the city where the ensemble was born: “From this slope, where it breaks its steepness most, a sun was born to the world, just as one sometimes rises from the Ganges; therefore, let him who speaks of that place not say Ascesi—for that would be to speak too briefly—but rather Orient, if he truly wishes to speak correctly.” (Dante Alighieri, Divine Comedy, Paradiso, Canto 11).
